Yorkshire Yarns Retreat -March 26-28th

ALL are welcome. (thowers/pickers/spinners/crocheters)
And yes. The picture above is Hicks Lake on the retreat site!

Overnight cost is $115
Daytripper cost is $25
**Overnighters bring your own bedding. (sleeping bag, pillow).
Everyone bring a snack or two to share...or not. :-)
We'll have the tea and coffee pots on 24/7.

We've got the facility aaaaaaall day on Friday & Sunday.
So!
We can arrive any time on the 26th and leave whenever we want on Sunday.
***NOTE: Dinner will be served at 6:30pm Friday night. I'll keep plates for those who arrive later.

Our lodge is the Westwood Retreat Centre. We have a big o' kitchen, large meeting/dining area, sleeping accomodations and WI-FI.
We'll be staying in our own lodge away from other guests on the grounds.
All our meals will be served there as well.

"The Gwinwood Retreat Facility is a 29 acre retreat hidden within the urbanized area of Lacey, Washington, near Olympia. It is located on Hicks Lake. The property includes 650 feet of developed waterfront and over 700 feet of natural waterfront, including significant shoreline along the Hicks Lake wetland. The park-like setting includes about 18 acres of forested land with first-generation, second-growth timber, 4 acres of open meadow lands and 7 acres of undisturbed wetlands."

YOU fill in the blanks. We have no guest speakers, teachers, presentations, etc. If you & your homegirls want to go on a local yarn crawl, hang out in your pj's all day or jog around the lake go right ahead. The goal is to relax!
Or as my kids say, "chillax".

There's plenty to do outdoors if you choose as well. Wanna play tennis? Knock yourself out. Care to sit by the lake with girlfriends?
You can do that too. Or you can take a canoe ride while I stand on the shoreline and wave.

Join us for Yorkshire Yarns 1st
Knitting/Crochet Retreat March
26-28th!

Come hang out w/the ladies of YY and knit, chat, paint your toe nails, swap girly stories and in the morning “we’re making waffles!” - Donkey

On March 26-28 our retreat will be held at the Gwinwood Christian Retreat Center in Lacey.

There are only 40 spots available. The cost is $115.00. Your reservation includes dinner on Friday, breakfast & dinner on Saturday and then breakfast on Sunday morning. After that the weekend slumber party is over and we aaaaaall head back to reality. :-)

Each room houses 4 people so get your buddies together and come have some fun!

Plan for a festive, relaxing atmosphere while we lounge in comfortable surroundings. Saturday we plan to hit a couple yarn shops in the area and maybe even the outlet mall down the road. Just be open to just about anything and bring your projects and a good attitude and I'll guarantee you'll have a GREAT time.

There will be a meet & greet reception on Saturday from 3-4pm. Classes w/Mary will begin at 4pm on Saturday & Sunday at 12:30.

Classes include Norwegian Selbu Knitting and the scary art of steeking ("Eeek! Steeks!) on Saturday the 30th & Sunday the 31st, respectively.

50 is fabulous!

Thank you to all of you who came to celebrate my 50th in a wonderful way. We took about 30-35 blankets to the homeless shelter. They even shared some birthday cake with me after 10 of the residents serenaded me with "Happy Birthday". I will never forget what a great day we had. :-)

Dustin Vinyard is the inspiration behind the nationwide Gator campaign.

Yep! From 11-3pm we'll have Cliff in our store. (Our friendly, stunningly handsome local Cascade Yarns rep.) He'll be there to show you some of the new fibers and colors from Cascade yarns.
Cliff will be there to answer questions and take special orders in any fiber you desire from this wonderful company.

Jennifer Hagan of Figheadh Designs will be there also to display and discuss her new designs.
And most of them happen to be Cascade Yarns friendly. hmmm...imagine that. :-) Jennifer's newly designed trunk show is a must see!

We'll keep the excitement and momentum going with our 1st ever Figheadh Fashion Show this Monday, September 19th from 6-8pm. Light snacks & beverages will be served during this special event.

It's back! The SheKnits Purse trunk show will be at Yorkshire Yarns until November 1st. SheKnits is popular and known for her mystery KAL's on Ravelry. (Her recent KAL had 427 members!)
Check out the versatile felted bag style of SK displayed at our front door.

Christmas Stocking Contest!

We're having a contest for the best AND ugliest knitted or crocheted Christmas Stocking.
Here's the deal.

1. All entries must be in by December 14th.
2. At least half the material in the stocking must have been purchased at Yorkshire Yarns. (proof of purchase required)
3. All entries must have been made beginning Oct. 14th, 2009.
4. There will be 2 catagories. We want the best AND ugliest. (The ugliest will be deliberate entries only. LOL)

Winners will be judged and announced December 18th during our Christmas/holiday party 6-8pm.
This is a people's choice decision.

The Land's End FeelGood is asking volunteers to knit 25,000 hats to warm-up the homeless & displaced. Come in and get the free yarn to get started.
Yorkshire Yarns supports Breast Cancer Awareness in October with projects & gadgets. Each are pink (of course) and part of the proceeds are donated towards breast cancer research.

SOTM club is designed to encourage sock kniters to try new, different and challenging techniques.

This month Shirley is teaching how to make the lovely "Queen of Cups" sock from Knitty.

I got to work at about 9:30 and expected a fairly quiet day.

We now have Mini Mochi & Mochi Plus in stock!

Mini Mochi is a fingering yarn for socks, lace work, baby items, scarves, garments.

The content is 80% Superwash Merino wool and 20% Nylon - it is Very Soft, single ply and in rich changing colors.

Mochi Plus is the bigger (aran wt) cousin to Mini Mochi, the fingering weight original.

The same soft hand (80% machine washable Merino + 20% nylon) and the same 16 color range.

Sock Workshops July 10th & 11th:

Lorna's Laces has designed a yarn specifically for Cat's instruction. The yarn changes colors as the knitter reaches a new technique in the sock anatomy. Cat's yarn will be available for purchase for each of her classes. Students will need a size 8/24" circular needle or size 8 double points. Cat will be teaching her techniques from her book, "New Pathways for Sock Knitters".

Mobieus Workshop, Sunday, July 12th:

Cat will be teaching from her books, "Treasury of Magical Knitting" & "A Second Treasury of Magical Knitting". Either book will work for the workshop. You'll need a needle appropriate to the project you select to do from one of the books. The needles need to be 47" long.

Are we as clear as mud? If you have any questions please call the shop at 253-589-9276. We'll clear up the muddy waters for ya. ***There will be no refunds given for cancellations after July 1st.

Tacoma Rainiers Stitch & Pitch tickets are available at the shop for $29. Kristeen Griffin-Grimes (French Girl Knits) will be throwing out the 1st pitch and she'll be in our booth for a book signing. And guess who's singing the National Anthem. Moi! :-)

CAT BORHI to teach at Yorkshire Yarns July 11th & 12th

This will be Cat Bordhi's 1st visit to a Lakewood/Tacoma yarn shop. And it took 2 years to get her here! I know. I can't believe it either. I flew all the way to Long Beach to take a couple of her classes a few years back. It was worth eeeeeeeevery frequent flier mile!

We're excited that Cat will be teaching 2 workshops at Yorkshire Yarns on **July 11th & 12th**. (We'll be open on Sunday the 12th for this special event.)

Workshops will be 6 hours long and begin at 10am. The cost is $85 each class.

**Saturday, July 11th - Setting Out on New Pathways for Sock Knitting**

After this workshop even new sock knitters will be ready to knit custom-fitted socks for any size foot. You’ll be knitting a little sock or two which will give you the understanding and skills needed to happily play with all 8 new kinds of sock architecture in New Pathways, and will learn many special
tips and tricks.

**Skill level:** must be fluent knitting in the round with 1 circ, 2
circs, or dpn's
Materials: Light-colored worsted weight wool yarn
(dpns’s, 2 circs or 1 long circular needle). Also bring sock yarn and appropriate size needles to start a life-size sock, as well as the usual little bag of knitting supplies.

**Sunday, July 12th - The Magic of Moebius Knitting**

It takes only minutes to learn Cat’s unique Moebius Cast-On, and then you have the key to everything in the Treasuries. For your first project, you’ll knit a Moebius scarf - to become familiar with this magical, friendly form, which is the heart of every Moebius bag, bowl, boot, cape, wrap, and bed. **(My favorite item is the one I affectionately call the "booty bowl".)** You can use one or multiple strands, or change yarns and textures along the way, and will discover that everything you do forms a beautiful mirror reflection growing from
the middle of the scarf out to the edges. We’ll talk about what happens if you introduce a diagonal stitch pattern, how to work with stripes, how to sequence lace repeats, learn several edge treatments, and explore the basics of designing your own Moebius scarf or wrap.

**Skill level:** confident beginner and up
Materials: Yarn and needles for your chosen project(s) (see either
Treasury), and the usual knitting supplies, including a stitch
marker. You must have a 47” circular needle or a Denise Kit with an
extra 30” or 40” cable.

FINALLY! We received a new shipment of SR Ketzer! I called the company and asked, "What's up w/my order?" Check this out. They said they tried to deliver it last Friday night at 7:30. WHAT?! Listen. I was home w/my family eating stale popcorn & being forced to watch "Twilight"...again. *sigh* Did I mention we're taking a trip to Forks w/three tweeners during spring break? Somebody help.

Times are tough for everyone. Yeah...I know. That's a "duh" statement. But I want to let you know we at Yorkie Yarns are doing what we can to help folks continue w/their yarn obsession during the economic crisis without breaking the bank. We're going to continue to bring in high quality affordable yarns. We'll continue our classes to match the demands of our patrons. And we'll keep on offering layaway. The Yorkshire Yarns layaway plan has been a huge success because folks are allowed to pay in small chunks to make sure they get the products they want/need without having to worry about them being sold out.

The one thing we can never do w/out is our gatherings of the yarnies. They're extremely fun. Folks continue to join us for knitting/crochet to get away from ...well....whatever. We're planning some new, fun things to add to those activities as well.

Now, here's a side note. Rumor has it many of you have seen our yarn mobile parked near Guitar Center on 38th. Here's the deal. My son Tyler works there and he's on commission. Yes, I know that's a shameless plug but he needs college money. Help the brother out and let him sell you what you need. Besides, he knows his stuff. Ty's the kid on the far right in the orange shirt. :-) The other 2 on the far left belong to us too but we can talk about that later.

Yorkshire Yarns is now on line! We've only just begun and have quite a ways to go to get all our products on the site. Go have a look around and see what we're doing. You can even register a personal account while you're there. No bank card information is collected and never will be. When you go back and shop the convenience fast, online shopping will be yours!

Mark your calendars for the 2009 South Sound Yarn Crawl on April 15th-17th ! We've included 2 new shops and this year we'll have 3 winners. :-) And you must check out the participating Bed & Breakfast Inn's. The Thornewood Castle & Inn in Lakewood is my favorite. Wowza!

I've got some new ones!

When I first saw the Knit Kit I thought, "Whoa. Isn't that a cute little miniature toilet seat." I took a closer look and this is what I saw. I'll have these in the store on Monday. Pretty cool, huh?

Also, we just got a shipment of measuring pens. It's an ink pen w/a built-in tape measurer. Slick.

Cat Borhdi will be teaching two all-day workshops YY on July 11th & 12th . She's teaching her ever popular sock class & mobius style. We're hoping her brand new sock book will be out in time as well! Each workshop will be 6 hours. The cost for one workshop is $85 .

Class sizes will be limited due to her enormous popularity. You snooze....well. :-) Call for details and sign up today!

July 22nd marks the first Tacoma Rainiers Stitch N Pitch event for the south sound! The yarnie get together will be held on a private party deck with an all you can eat & drink buffet. And check this out. Fifteen...count 'em...FIFTEEN yarn shops will be "on deck" with lots of goodies to sell. Here's the best part. Yorkshire Yarns is hosting "French Girl Knit's" author, Kristeen Griffin-Grimes. She'll be in our booth for a meet & greet. There will be plenty of her new books on hand for autographs too!

The SSYC includess 10 beautiful shops in the south sound. We've include 2 new shops for 2009. Added is Fibers Etc. of Tacoma and Debbie Macomber's new shop, A Good Yarn in Port Orchard.

Saturday for teaching at Yorkshire Yarns.

March 14th from 10:30-1:30, learn Cableology I. This is a Basic Cables class.

Hazel Knits/Wendee Trunk Show this Saturday, March 7th!

Wendee and her luscious trunk show will be at Yorkshire Yarns from 11-1pm this Saturday, March 7th.
Come meet the master of color and see some her newest creations. Rumor has it, she's bringing a few rouges too!
You've heard it said, "Get there early for the best selection. blah...blah...blah..." I'm not kidding.

Check it out. Last night for the "JOE" fashion show, at last count there were at least 56.
I tooooooooold you to get there early. So trust me about Saturday. It'll be worth it to you. :-)

This Sunday, March 8th from 1-3pm is the Mosaic/slip-stitch class w/designer, Lisa Ellis.
(She's the creator of that really popular bulky, weekend project vest we have in the store.)
Anyhoo, Mosaic/slip-stitch is the simplest way to work in color -knitting with only 1 color at a time while
the other colors are stranded at the beginning of the row.
Slip Stitch knitting takes less yarn, doesn't pucker like fair isle and is just as strong and durable as the linen stitch.

Hey. I finally found some project holders that DON'T require you to cut your yarn if you want to change-out your unfinished project. Yesssss.... They come in pink to support breast cancer support. And they're available in clear.

I want to thank all of you have given me assistance when trying to read those tiny numbers on the Addi circular needles. I've decided to wear my glasses every day. But as the eyes go so does the memory. On the days I forget to wear my bifocals I take advantage of our new circular needle ID tags. These are awesome and only $2.50!

FREE "Sweater Wizard" seminar w/Sonya

Many of you have seen us use this handy, dandy tool in the store. You can create your own sweater JUST your size w/this easy computer program. You can also adjust patterns you already own by placing in correct measurements. You want a v-neck? Cardigan? Scoop neck? No prob! And this just the tip of the iceberg!

We’re offering this seminar twice. Each class size will be limited to 6 so sign-up early to grab a spot.

Beginner-TWO SOCKS on 1 circular-magic

THIS IS A 2 SESSION CLASS

Learn to make 2 socks on ONE LOOONG circular needle! Just think... no more second sock syndrome! When you're done you're done! Want to learn how to make socks, how about TWO socks at once on ONE long circular needle. Whether you have knitted a sock before or have always wanted to learn to knit socks this class is for you. Left handed knitters especially welcomed!!

Prereq: Must know basic knitting (K, P, and cast on)

Class materials: 1 skein DK Marble, Size 5 us circular needle - 60" cable and markers

Sock of The Month Club

Monday, Sept. 22nd, / 6-8pm

SOTMC: Sock of the Month Club meets once a month on the 3rd Monday from 6-7:30pm. The cost is $35 each month and includes a pattern, a skein of the finest of sock yarn and 1.5 hours of instruction. Here’s the tricky part so listen closely. You do NOT have to attend club meetings but if you do you’ll receive a free skein of sock yarn after 12 punches. Uh…ahem…I mean punches on your attendance card. The purpose of
the club is to stretch and challenge sock knitters to new heights. You’ll be introduced to lace, argyle, fancy rib stitching, knee-highs, stockings and much more. We’ll announce the featured pattern at the beginning of each month. You may sign-up at any time. Heck. You can even skip a month or two. To join the SOTM Club you would have had to have knit socks previously.

Cost: $35 which includes pattern, yarn & instruction.

Beginning two-handed fair isle for beginning/intermediate knitters

Learn a quick and simple way to work w/color using the 2-handed fair isle method. You'll be surprised at how fun & easy it is to finally use 2 or more colors in your knitting! Prereq: must know how to knit & purl. Materials: 16” size 8 circular needles, 4 colors worsted weight scrap yarn, Fair Isle pattern (we have plenty from which to choose)

It's time to move on up to sweaters! Jane will teach you to knit a simple sweater. You learn how to swatch, take measurements, read intermediate patterns and simple finishing work.

Materials: Pattern Knitting Pure & Simple #9724, appropriate yarn amount for desired size 24" circ needles sizes 9 & 6; 16" circ needles 9 & 6; dbl pt needles 9 & 6 stitch markers
